# Crime and Punishment #7 (October 1948) This issue presents two distinct crime stories. The first features a hit-and-run case in which officers pursue a suspect involved in a vehicular accident, with dialogue revealing the manhunt and legal consequences. The second story, "The Mad Houdini," is a true crime account set on April 23, 1937, detailing a violent encounter between Joe Whelan and Patrolman Jim O'Brien in Boston; when O'Brien attempts to apprehend Whelan for the murder of Barney Shane, Whelan shoots and kills the officer before escaping in a stolen vehicle with a woman as hostage. The issue also includes a domestic drama subplot involving marriage, infidelity, and family tensions among its characters.
