Darwyn Cooke was born on November 16, 1962, in Canada, and passed away on May 14, 2016. He is best remembered as a singular voice in comics—a writer, artist, and animator whose clean, retro-modern style left a lasting impression on the medium. Cooke began his career in animation before transitioning to comics, where his breakthrough came with a celebrated run on *Catwoman*, reimagining Selina Kyle with a sleek, noir-inspired sensibility. His most acclaimed work remains *DC: The New Frontier*, a six-issue miniseries that recontextualized the Silver Age of superheroes with a mature, historically grounded narrative. Cooke also revitalized Will Eisner’s *The Spirit* and adapted Richard Stark’s crime novels into the graphic novel *Parker: The Hunter*, showcasing his mastery of mood and composition. He collaborated frequently with writer Ed Brubaker and later wrote and drew *Before Watchmen: Minutemen*, a prequel that captured the moral complexity of Alan Moore’s universe.
