Born in 1978, Philip Tan is a Malaysian comic book artist and writer whose career spans more than two decades of work for the industry's major publishers. He broke into the field around 2001 and has since accumulated credits across roughly 160 issues, demonstrating a sustained versatility that few artists of his generation can match.
Tan is perhaps most closely associated with Spawn, Todd McFarlane's flagship Image Comics series, where his dynamic, heavily detailed linework found a natural home in the book's dark supernatural atmosphere. He also contributed to Spawn Godslayer, further deepening his ties to that corner of the Image universe. At Marvel, his run on Uncanny X-Men brought his kinetic style to one of the publisher's cornerstone franchises, and his work on Iron Man added to a growing mainstream profile.
Over at DC Comics, Tan proved equally at ease with superhero material, lending his draftsmanship to The Outsiders and later taking on The Savage Hawkman. He also worked on The Curse of Brimstone, a darker, more atmospheric DC title that echoed some of the sensibilities he had honed on Spawn.
Functioning as artist, inker, and occasional writer, Tan has shown a willingness to engage with multiple facets of the comics-making process. His work remained active through at least 2025, reflecting an enduring presence in mainstream American comics.
