This issue delivers the first appearance of the Saiko-Jonin, a new villain created by Claremont expressly to escalate the Hand's threat against Wolverine, Captain America, and Black Widow, and it marks Matsu'o Tsurayaba's first significant in-continuity appearance since the classic era. Claremont conceived Madripoor Knights as a direct continuation of the story threads he wove in Uncanny X-Men #268 (1990), an issue he originally scripted over Jim Lee's pencils. Now working with artist Edgar Salazar and cover artist Philip Tan, Claremont was given editorial space by editor Mark Basso and senior editor Jordan D. White to craft a five-issue limited series functioning as an authorially sanctioned retcon-insert — new in-continuity material set during a window that the 1990 comics left deliberately open. Issue #4, released May 15, 2024 under a July 2024 cover date, is the penultimate chapter of that five-issue structure and the issue in which the series' central new creation, the Saiko-Jonin, fully arrives on the stage.
