History

The series — and by extension this issue — was conceived as a pillar of Marvel's line-wide Wolverine 50th-anniversary initiative announced in September 2023, with Claremont personally championing the project as a spiritual sequel to UXM #268, a story he had long felt was unfinished. Editor Mark Basso shepherded the project, pairing Claremont with artist Edgar Salazar, who had recently completed X-23: Deadly Regenesis for Marvel, bringing a contemporary penciling sensibility to Claremont's classic plotting style. Philip Tan handled covers across the run with coloring by Sebastian Cheng, while interior color was provided by Carlos Lopez and lettering by VC's Cory Petit — a full modern Marvel production team wrapped around a deliberately retro storytelling approach. Issue #2 shipped on March 20, 2024, with a final-order cutoff of February 19, 2024, and was offered with multiple variant covers including incentive editions by Simone Bianchi and Greg & Tim Hildebrandt (the latter tied to the Wolverine Marvel Masterpieces III program).
