Born on July 1, 1949, Mike Baron is an American comic book writer and novelist whose career spans more than four decades of prolific output. He broke into the medium in the early 1980s and quickly established himself as a writer with a sharp instinct for unconventional characters and genre-bending storytelling.
Atari Force #15 (1985)
Baron is perhaps best known as the sole creator of The Badger — a martial-arts expert with a fractured personality — and as co-creator of Nexus alongside artist Steve Rude, a science-fiction series blending superhero action with moral complexity that remains among the more distinctive works of the independent comics era. Both titles became signature achievements of his early career and continued to define his reputation with readers and critics alike.

His work for the major publishers proved equally significant. Baron was the first writer to helm an ongoing Punisher series at Marvel Comics, helping to shape that character's long-running appeal, and he took on a celebrated run writing DC's The Flash in its second volume. Across more than 550 credited issues — including work on titles such as Robotech Masters and Oriental Heroes — he demonstrated unusual range.

Baron earned an Eisner Award for his contributions to the field, a recognition that cemented his standing among the writers who helped define American comics through the 1980s and beyond.
