The Punisher #37
The Punisher #37 serves as the third chapter of the six-part 'Jigsaw Puzzle' arc (issues #35–40), one of the more ambitious sustained storylines of Mike Baron's long run on the 1987 ongoing series, transplanting Frank Castle from New York street crime into the jungles of Venezuela. Most concretely, the issue marks the first appearance of Joy Adams — a jungle guide who becomes entangled with Castle while he hunts Jigsaw and the Rev — making it her sole debut appearance in the Marvel Universe (Earth-616). The arc's pairing of two recurring Punisher antagonists, the disfigured hitman Jigsaw and the cult-leader-turned-Belasco-worshipper the Rev, represented one of the few times the Copper Age Punisher series committed to a multi-issue villain team-up with ongoing consequences for both villains, giving the title more serialized weight than its typically self-contained monthly format allowed.

Written by Mike Baron — who had been the series' primary writer since its 1987 launch — and penciled and inked by Mark Texeira, issue #37 was edited by Don Daley with Rob Tokar as assistant editor under editor-in-chief Tom DeFalco. The issue carried the story title 'Perilous Passage' and went on sale June 19, 1990, with a cover date of late August 1990 and a cover by Tom Morgan. Texeira, whose scratchy, high-contrast style was well matched to the Venezuela jungle setting, handled both pencils and inks on this chapter, though the arc saw rotating artists across its six parts — a production reality of the monthly semi-monthly schedule Marvel was running on the title at the time.
