Born in 1966, Michael Lark is an American comic book artist and colorist whose three-decade career has produced some of the most atmospherically grounded work in mainstream superhero comics. He broke into the industry in the mid-1990s, with his catalog credits stretching from 1995 onward across more than 200 issues.
Shade, the Changing Man #58 (1995)
Lark built his reputation largely through crime-inflected, street-level storytelling. At DC Comics he contributed pencils to *Terminal City*, *Legend of the Hawkman*, *Batman: Nine Lives*, and the critically acclaimed *Gotham Central*, which reframed Gotham's world through the eyes of its police department rather than its costumed vigilantes. At Marvel, his work on *Daredevil*, *The Pulse*, *Spider-Man*, and *Captain America* continued that same commitment to gritty, grounded visual storytelling.
Shade, the Changing Man #59 (1995)
His most sustained collaboration has been with writer Greg Rucka on *Lazarus*, an ongoing science-fiction series for which Lark has contributed to every issue, along with the related volumes *Lazarus: Risen* and *Lazarus Fallen*. The partnership reflects a shared interest in near-future political tension rendered with disciplined, cinematic draftsmanship.
Terminal City #1 (1996)
Lark's industry standing is reflected in his receipt of both the Harvey and Eisner Awards, two of comics' most respected honors. His body of work is defined less by spectacle than by careful atmosphere and character-driven composition.
