The Books of Magic #68

This late-running Vertigo series continues its unsettling journey into the DC Universe's magical corners with issue #68, "Pentimento." MW Kaluta's cover is genuinely haunting: a towering blue-skinned, antlered being with red eyes looms over a tiny, bespectacled young figure — presumably Tim Hunter — who stands dwarfed before a table flanked by grotesque horned masks, the whole composition radiating an eerie, mythic grandeur. With interior art from Peter Gross, Michael Lark, and Ryan Kelly, this January 2000 entry delivers the moody, otherworldly atmosphere that made Books of Magic a standout on the Vertigo shelf.
