The Eisner and Harvey Award-nominated series returns with this opening chapter by Dean Motter and Michael Lark, kicking off a five-issue DC Vertigo miniseries in 1997. Mark Chiarello's cover sets the mood perfectly: a hulking, dome-headed robot bearing the stenciled motto "OBEY AND PROTECT" looms in the foreground, one mechanical arm raised and pistol in hand, while a grid of rain-slicked window panes frames a dramatic skyline of towering amber skyscrapers behind it. It's a beautifully composed, retro-futurist image that captures Terminal City's distinctive blend of noir atmosphere and pulp-tinged unease.
