Steve Lieber was born on May 19, 1967, and has built a career as one of American comics' most versatile and grounded illustrators, with credits spanning more than 190 issues from the early 1990s through the present day. He came up through mainstream superhero work, contributing to titles such as Detective Comics and Hawkman, but it was his collaboration with writer Greg Rucka on the Antarctic crime thriller Whiteout that established his broader reputation. That miniseries demonstrated his ability to anchor a story in authentic atmosphere and expressive character work, earning enough attention to spawn a 2009 film adaptation starring Kate Beckinsale. The sequel, Whiteout: Melt, went on to win an Eisner Award. Further thriller work followed with Shooters and Underground, reinforcing his affinity for grounded, suspense-driven narratives.

Lieber has also shown a genuine facility for comedy, most notably on The Superior Foes of Spider-Man and The Fix, where his clean, controlled linework proved equally well-suited to screwball timing. Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen and One-Star Squadron demonstrated similar range. He co-authored The Complete Idiot's Guide to Creating a Graphic Novel alongside Nat Gertler, reflecting a commitment to craft and accessibility that runs through his work. Lieber has described his professional focus as telling stories with a unified vision and a sense of finality — a philosophy evident across every genre he has tackled.
