Norman Mingo
1896–1980
Norman Theodore Mingo was born on January 25, 1896, in the United States, and died on May 8, 1980. A commercial artist and illustrator by trade, he is best remembered for the assignment that fixed the face of Alfred E. Neuman, the gap-toothed, freckled mascot of *Mad* magazine. Mingo was commissioned to formalize the character’s look, creating the definitive portrait that would appear on the magazine’s covers and within its pages for decades. His work for *Mad* began in the mid-1960s and continued into the 2000s, though his credited appearances on issues—as artist, colorist, or inker—span from 1964 to 2009, with the bulk of his output on the flagship title and its spin-offs like *Mad Special*, *Mad Super Special*, *Svenska Mad*, *Mad in Orbit*, *Fighting Mad*, and *Howling Mad*. Mingo’s style was clean, direct, and perfectly suited to the magazine’s satirical tone, making Neuman’s smirk an enduring symbol of irreverent humor. He collaborated with the *Mad* staff and contributed to the magazine’s visual identity during its peak years. Later in life, Mingo remained a respected figure in illustration, though his legacy is anchored by that single, iconic assignment.
