Bob Montana
Bob Montana was born Robert William Montana on October 23, 1920, in Stockton, California, and died on January 4, 1975. He is best known as the creator of the original visual designs for the characters that would become the core of Archie Comics, including the long-running newspaper strip *Archie*. Montana’s path into comics began in the late 1930s, and by 1941 he was working on the early issues of *Pep Comics*, where he first drew the teenage characters that would define his career. His signature style—clean, friendly, and full of expressive, cartoony energy—set the tone for the wholesome, humorous world of Riverdale. He collaborated closely with writer Vic Bloom on the initial stories, and his work as artist, inker, letterer, and writer appears across 88 issues, most notably in *Archie Comics*, *Pep*, and *Archie’s Pal Jughead*. Montana’s co-creations include the enduring archetypes of Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and Jughead Jones. After his death, his legacy continued through the strip’s syndication and the characters’ lasting cultural footprint. He received no major awards during his lifetime, but his foundational contributions to American comic strips remain widely acknowledged.
