“A Man Without a Country”

In "A Man Without a Country," spirits from history—Julius Caesar, the Three Musketeers, and Napoleon—return to the living world to aid Mr. Justice in the war effort, only to confront the brutal reality of Nazi atrocities when their rescue mission ends in tragedy. Back in the underworld, Mr. Justice confronts the spirits, and it’s Nero, of all figures, who offers a surprising clarity on the cost of war. Written by Joe Blair and illustrated by Sam Cooper, with a cover by Bob Montana, this 1942 issue blends wartime urgency with a touch of historical irony.

Spirits in the underworld think Mr. Justice is not doing a good enough job fighting the war, so at the bequest of Julius Caesar, Athos, Porthos, Aramis and Napoleon go back to the realm of the living. But they underestimate Nazi cruelty when they rescue prisoners but are shocked when men are gunned down. Mr. Justice takes them all back the underworld and addresses the spirits there. Oddly enough, it is Nero who makes sense out of all of it.
