Zambini relates he story of an ancient magician Zog and another ancient sea captain named Rex (from the days of ancient Rome and Greece) to another old sea captain named Rex who was thinking of committing suicide as opposed to being a burden on his wife and daughter. The story inspires him that, while he is able, he can devote himself to fighting for freedom and do some kind of service for his country. And, while he can do that, he's not a burden.
