“Knots to You”

Archie Comics #21 from 1946 boasts a cover by Al Fagaly that perfectly captures the series' cheerful chaos: Archie has pinned a dark-haired fellow to the floor mid-scuffle while a horrified older woman rushes in through the doorway, all beneath a prominently hung "Observe Courtesy Week" sign — the irony couldn't be more delicious. Archie's plaintive speech bubble insists he was "only tryin' to get Reggie to say 'please,'" which is exactly the kind of lovable absurdity that made this title "The Mirth of a Nation." With a print run proudly boasted at over 1,306,000 copies, this issue stands as a lively snapshot of postwar teen comedy at its most entertaining.
