Phillip Kennedy Johnson
Phillip Kennedy Johnson is an American comic book writer best known for his acclaimed runs on Superman and Action Comics, Batman and Robin, The Incredible Hulk, Alien, and 007. His work has appeared across a remarkably wide range of publishers, including DC, Marvel, BOOM! Studios, Dynamite, IDW, Aftershock, and Scout Comics, with credits as a writer stretching from 2017 through the mid-2020s across more than 160 issues.
Before establishing himself in comics, Johnson led a genuinely unusual professional life. An Army veteran, he served as a trumpet player with the U.S. Army Field Band in Washington, D.C., and went on to perform with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Moscow Ballet, the Dallas Opera, the Washington Symphonic Brass, and the Benny Goodman Orchestra — a musical résumé that few writers in the medium can match.
His comics work spans superhero titles, horror, and licensed properties, reflecting a versatility in genre that has made him a sought-after voice at multiple publishers. Among his notable collaborators is artist Nic Klein, with whom he marked a milestone moment in Marvel history when their Incredible Hulk #19, published in November 2024, celebrated the character's 800th issue. Johnson has received an Eisner Award nomination in recognition of his contributions to the field.
