About this Issue

Hellhunters #4 is the pivotal penultimate chapter of Phillip Kennedy Johnson's five-issue WWII horror miniseries, serving as the narrative and thematic fulcrum where Ghost Rider '44 and his team receive supernatural weapons directly from Zarathos, the primordial Spirit of Vengeance. The issue is notable for its densely layered retroactive foreshadowing: the Zarathos-granted enhancements given to Bucky Barnes, Logan, Nick Fury, and Peggy Carter each deliberately echo those characters' iconic futures — Bucky's flaming arm points toward the Winter Soldier, Fury's engulfed eye toward his signature eye patch — making this issue a creative bridge between WWII pulp horror and decades of Marvel continuity. The issue also delivers the full origin of the Unhallowed, the demonic faction whose master plan for Earth's conquest had been seeded throughout the series, locking in this issue's place as a key payoff chapter. Together with the broader series, issue #4 demonstrates how Johnson used a creator-driven concept — one he describes as a story that 'wouldn't exist' without him — to expand and enrich the Ghost Rider mythology within the Marvel Universe.

History

Ghost Rider '44, the character at the heart of this series, was introduced by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist Nic Klein during Johnson's run on Incredible Hulk, where Sergeant Sal Romero first appeared as a WWII-era Spirit of Vengeance. The overwhelmingly positive fan response to that character prompted Johnson to develop a standalone origin series, and he teamed with artist Adam Gorham — known for his work on Immortal Hulk and Star Wars: Darth Vader — to produce the five-issue Hellhunters limited series, announced in September 2024 for a December 2024 launch. Johnson has described Hellhunters as his first Marvel series that originated entirely from his own creative vision, with cover art on the series provided by Jonas Scharf and the editor-in-chief being C.B. Cebulski.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Hellhunters #4 was written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson with interior art by Adam Gorham, cover art by Jonas Scharf, and a variant cover by Declan Shalvey; it was released on March 12, 2025, with a May 2025 cover date.

  • Issue #4's central plot turn involves the full revelation of the Unhallowed's origin and their plan for global domination, which had been building across the preceding three issues.
  • Zarathos, the primordial Spirit of Vengeance, grants each Hellhunter a supernatural 'soulbound weapon' in this issue: Logan receives flaming claws foreshadowing his Adamantium-coated Wolverine claws, Bucky Barnes's arm is consumed in hellfire prefiguring his Winter Soldier cybernetic arm, Nick Fury's left eye is engulfed in flame anticipating its loss, and Peggy Carter manifests a shield.
  • The full roster of characters appearing in issue #4 includes Ghost Rider '44 (Sal Romero), Bucky Barnes, Logan, Sergeant Nick Fury, Peggy Carter, Soldier Supreme (Sebastian Szardos), the Unhallowed, and antagonist Felix Bruckner (possessed by Calphael).
  • The series — and this issue — spun directly out of Johnson's run on Incredible Hulk, where Ghost Rider '44 first appeared, created by Johnson and artist Nic Klein; Hellhunters gave the character a full-length origin treatment.
  • Soldier Supreme (Sebastian Szardos), a character originating in Jason Aaron's Avengers run, appears as a supporting member of the Hellhunters team throughout the series and in issue #4.
  • The issue is rated Parental Advisory (T+) and was edited under Jordan D. White with C.B. Cebulski as Editor-in-Chief.
