About this Issue

Hellhunters #2 marks the first appearance of Logan (Wolverine) within this series, cementing the Hellhunters as Marvel's definitive WWII supernatural super-team by uniting Ghost Rider '44, Sergeant Nick Fury, Peggy Carter, and the Soldier Supreme with one of the publisher's most enduring mutant heroes on a single battlefield. Rather than using Wolverine as a hollow cameo, writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson integrates him organically into the team's moral fabric — his shared grudge against the same demonic Nazi forces gives his arrival narrative weight rather than star-power spectacle. The issue also deepens the origin of Ghost Rider '44 (Sergeant Sal Romero), a character first introduced during Johnson's Incredible Hulk run, expanding that mythology into a fully realized WWII horror ensemble. Colorist Frank Martin's deliberately differentiated palette — hellfire reds for Romero's Ghost Rider fire versus icy blue-violet for the demonic Unhallowed — establishes a visual grammar for the supernatural factions that carries through the rest of the five-issue series.

History

The creative seed for Hellhunters was planted during Phillip Kennedy Johnson's tenure on Incredible Hulk, where he and artist Nic Klein first introduced Sergeant Sal Romero as Ghost Rider '44 in Incredible Hulk #6; fan response to the character was strong enough that Johnson immediately began developing a dedicated origin series. Johnson then partnered with artist Adam Gorham — known for his work on Immortal Hulk and Star Wars: Darth Vader — to produce the five-issue limited series, with Johnson later noting that he had a fully realized origin story for Romero in mind even before Klein drew the character's debut. The series launched in December 2024 under editor Jordan D. White and editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski, with issue #2 shipping January 29, 2025, and cover art by Jonas Scharf.
