Hellhunters #1 delivers the in-continuity origin story of Ghost Rider '44 (Sgt. Sal Romero), a breakout character Phillip Kennedy Johnson had introduced in his Incredible Hulk run, giving that corner of Marvel mythology a proper WWII-era foundation. The issue also formally assembles, for the first time on the page together, a covert supernatural wartime unit comprising Sgt. Nick Fury, Peggy Carter, and the Soldier Supreme — a team whose infernal power upgrades across the series are deliberately designed to foreshadow the futures of each member (Bucky's metal arm, Fury's missing eye). By rooting cosmic horror in the specific moral horror of Nazi-occupied Europe, the series extends Marvel's long tradition of WWII wartime adventure into genuinely Mature-rated folk horror territory, a tonal space the publisher had not fully occupied with this particular cast before.

History

Ghost Rider '44 first appeared — in cameo — in Incredible Hulk Vol. 6 #1 (2023), with his full debut in issue #6, both written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson with art by Nic Klein. Strong fan response to the character convinced Johnson and Marvel to commission a dedicated origin series; Johnson has stated he had Romero's complete backstory plotted before Klein ever drew the character. The five-issue limited series was announced in September 2024 and paired Johnson with Adam Gorham — a natural fit given Gorham's prior work on Immortal Hulk — with colors by Frank Martin Jr. and lettering by VC's Travis Lanham, under editor Jordan D. White and editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski.
