Hellhunters #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeHellhunters #1 delivers the in-continuity origin story of Ghost Rider '44 (Sgt. Sal Romero), a breakout character Phillip Kennedy Johnson had introduced in his Incredible Hulk run, giving that corner of Marvel mythology a proper WWII-era foundation. The issue also formally assembles, for the first time on the page together, a covert supernatural wartime unit comprising Sgt. Nick Fury, Peggy Carter, and the Soldier Supreme — a team whose infernal power upgrades across the series are deliberately designed to foreshadow the futures of each member (Bucky's metal arm, Fury's missing eye). By rooting cosmic horror in the specific moral horror of Nazi-occupied Europe, the series extends Marvel's long tradition of WWII wartime adventure into genuinely Mature-rated folk horror territory, a tonal space the publisher had not fully occupied with this particular cast before.

Ghost Rider '44 first appeared — in cameo — in Incredible Hulk Vol. 6 #1 (2023), with his full debut in issue #6, both written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson with art by Nic Klein. Strong fan response to the character convinced Johnson and Marvel to commission a dedicated origin series; Johnson has stated he had Romero's complete backstory plotted before Klein ever drew the character. The five-issue limited series was announced in September 2024 and paired Johnson with Adam Gorham — a natural fit given Gorham's prior work on Immortal Hulk — with colors by Frank Martin Jr. and lettering by VC's Travis Lanham, under editor Jordan D. White and editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski.
Trivia · 8 facts
- First full in-continuity origin of Ghost Rider '44 (Sgt. Sal Romero), who had previously appeared only in Phillip Kennedy Johnson's Incredible Hulk run (first cameo Vol. 6 #1, June 2023; first full appearance Vol. 6 #6, November 2023).
- Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson; interior art by Adam Gorham; colors by Frank Martin Jr.; letters by VC's Travis Lanham; main cover by Jonas Scharf.
- Issue #1 establishes the on-page team debut of the Hellhunters as a named WWII supernatural strike force, featuring Sgt. Nick Fury, Peggy Carter, and the Soldier Supreme (Sebastian Szardos) alongside Ghost Rider '44 in their first joint mission.
- The Soldier Supreme (Sebastian Szardos) — a magically empowered soldier-sorcerer previously introduced in Jason Aaron's Avengers — appears here as a founding Hellhunters member.
- Mephisto is listed among the characters appearing in the issue per Grand Comics Database sourcing; the nature of the 'Devil' who grants Romero his Ghost Rider transformation is deliberately kept ambiguous in the debut issue.
- Antagonist Felix Bruckner (Hauptmann/Captain Bruckner) makes his first appearance in this issue as the Nazi officer possessed by ancient demonic evil — the series' central villain.
- Logan (Wolverine) and Bucky Barnes join the Hellhunters roster in subsequent issues (#2 and #3 respectively); Hellhunters #1 itself focuses on establishing Romero's origin and the initial team before either of those characters appear.
- The completed five-issue series (February–June 2025) was collected in a trade paperback (Hellhunters Vol. 1, collecting #1–5), and Ghost Rider '44 subsequently appeared in Thunderbolts: Doomstrike, with Bucky Barnes as the connecting thread between the two series.
