Elliot S! Maggin
Elliot S! Maggin (born 1950) is an American writer whose career spans comic books, television, film, and novels, though he remains most closely identified with his long run at DC Comics during the Bronze Age and early Modern Age of the medium. Beginning his DC work in 1972, Maggin became one of the defining voices on Superman across multiple titles, contributing to well over two hundred issues during an active stretch that extended into 2018. Beyond Superman, his credits include substantial work on Shazam!, Batman, and Action Comics, reflecting a broad engagement with DC's superhero pantheon rather than a narrow specialty.
Outside comics, Maggin pursued a notably varied public life, involving himself in Democratic Party politics and twice seeking his party's congressional nomination — first in New Hampshire's 2nd district in 1984, then in California's 24th district in 2008. Neither bid proved successful, but both underscored a civic engagement that ran parallel to his creative output throughout the decades.
His legacy rests chiefly on the warmth and moral clarity he brought to Superman storytelling during a formative era, helping to shape how readers understood the character's humanity alongside his power.
