“Invasion of the Salad Men!”

Few comic covers from 1974 manage to be simultaneously absurd and charming, but Bob Oksner's pencils and inks deliver exactly that here — Captain Marvel is held at gunpoint by a determined elderly woman demanding he marry her, while a nervous-looking justice of the peace gets a pistol pressed to his own temple for good measure. The speech bubble's gleeful threat ("Marry me, you Big Red Cheese — or else!") sets a perfectly comedic tone for this Elliot S! Maggin–written issue, with art by Oksner and Vince Colletta bringing the humor to life. And if that weren't enough, the cover also promises a brand-new Mary Marvel story as a bonus, making this a genuinely fun package from DC's "With One Magic Word" era.
