“Worms of the World, Unite!”

C. C. Beck's cover for Shazam! #9 (1974) sets up a delightfully absurd puzzle: Captain Marvel stands scratching his head, exclaiming "Holy Moley! Am I me — or am I you?" while a chimp dressed in a matching red-and-gold Captain Marvel costume mimics his pose and cheerfully shouts "Vootie! Vootie!" The story title "The Day Shazam Went Ape!" says it all, and a small inset portrait of Captain Marvel Jr. promises a second new story to sweeten the deal — all for just twenty cents.
