“The Man Who Wasn't”

From 1973 comes this delightful entry in DC's revival of the Big Red Cheese — the cover by C. C. Beck puts Captain Marvel front and center, fists cocked, as taunting speech bubbles swirl all around him from an apparently elusive, unseen tormentor daring him to land a punch. Beck's clean, expressive linework captures the hero's mix of determination and frustration perfectly, while a smaller figure of Billy Batson appears in the upper corner, a nod to the magic word that started it all. With Elliot S! Maggin and Beck together on the interiors as well, Shazam! #5 is a treat for anyone who loves the original Captain Marvel in his full Golden Age-flavored glory.
