William Erwin Eisner was born on March 6, 1917, and died on January 3, 2005. One of the earliest figures to work professionally in the American comic book industry, he built a career spanning nearly seven decades that left a measurable imprint on the medium's artistic and literary ambitions.

Eisner entered comics in the mid-1930s, and by 1940 he had launched *The Spirit*, a crime-adventure series that ran until 1952. The strip became his calling card, distinguished by its restless formal experimentation — unconventional page layouts, expressive typography, and a cinematic sense of atmosphere that set it apart from contemporary superhero fare. It remains his most-credited work across hundreds of issues, later collected in archival editions.

Beyond storytelling, Eisner contributed substantially to how comics are understood as a form. His 1978 book *A Contract with God* brought wider cultural attention to the term "graphic novel," helping legitimize long-form comics for adult readers. His 1985 follow-up, *Comics and Sequential Art*, became a foundational text in formal comics studies.

His influence is perhaps most visibly honored through the Eisner Awards, presented annually to recognize excellence across the comics industry, and he was among the three inaugural inductees to the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame. Few creators have shaped both the practice and the critical vocabulary of an art form as durably as he did.
