This anthology issue contains three Spirit stories. "The Grumly Murder," by Will Eisner, explores a psychological experiment in terror where a criminal's mind is manipulated like a rubber band, stretched and twisted until it snaps. "Flatfoot Burns" depicts a comedic race between two characters named Flatfoot Burns and Discus as they compete in a hurdle event, with the lead changing hands multiple times before Flatfoot ultimately wins. The third story, "Love Comes to the Spirit," shows a domestic scene where characters discuss marriage and relationships, with The Spirit appearing to visit a household.

When Police Commissioner Dolan's sister Mathilda prepares to marry the wealthy Glut Mutton, the Spirit discovers that Mutton's real scheme is to infiltrate the family and blackmail the Commissioner during a major heist. With the wedding set for June and the city's gold trucks scheduled to roll through, the Spirit must balance his duty to stop crime with the romantic complications that spring has brought to Central City.
