When a murder at a fancy hotel brings the Spirit and Commissioner Dolan to investigate the death of a man named Aramor, an unexpected guest tags along—a Persian cat that Commissioner Dolan can't stand. As the cat's keen nose for sardine oil leads them deeper into the case, they uncover a smuggling scheme far more valuable than anyone suspected. It turns out the cat's instincts might be exactly what they needed to catch a killer.

When a champion steeplechaser called Jackie Boy is injured in a suspicious fall during a race, Ebony refuses to let him be put down and nurses him back to health with the Spirit's help. Racing Jackie Boy again the following Saturday, the two must outwit the criminals Dirty Louie and Tinhorn Tom, who are determined to sabotage the horse's comeback using a dangerous trick.

The Spirit investigates Central City's strangest case when a mysterious headless burglar steals the valuable Von Gelt diamonds, with help from his companion Ebony White and police commissioner Dolan. What appears to be a supernatural crime becomes far more cunning when the Spirit discovers that nothing—including a criminal's ambitions—can hide from a keen eye and a plaster cast of footprints.
