The Spirit #3
This anthology issue features four stories from The Spirit's case-book: "It Kills by Dark," illustrated by Will Eisner, follows The Spirit as he confronts a mysterious threat in darkness; "The Walking Corpse" presents a supernatural menace; "The League of Liars" involves The Spirit investigating a criminal organization, with plot elements involving Mr. Nero and deception; and "A Man Named Nero" depicts encounters with the villain Mr. Nero in an ornate Roman-style setting where The Spirit works to stop his schemes.
A small-time crook claims he's eliminated the Spirit with four blank cartridges—but when the masked hero arrives at a tenement apartment in response to a carefully laid trap, he discovers the real victim is someone far closer to his killer's heart. Will Eisner's "The Walking Corpse" is a sharp twist on the contract-killer yarn, where ambition and a partner's mockery lead a desperate man to pull off the one job he never should have attempted.
When the Spirit is lured into a trap by criminals, he awakens in an isolated mountain compound—an exact replica of ancient Rome built in complete secrecy by P.T. Nero, a circus impresario who disappeared years ago. Nero has spent fifteen years and millions of dollars constructing his masterpiece, and now he demands the ultimate spectacle: the Spirit, armed only with a knife, thrown into a pit with two starving lions. With help from an unexpected ally, the Spirit must find a way out of Nero's twisted arena before the showman's grand finale begins.
