Blue Beetle #1
The Blue Beetle fights gangsters of the underworld who have stolen money, struggling to recover a bill that falls during their escape and ultimately retrieving it through a nearby window. In the backup story "Yarko the Great Master of Magic," a mysterious magician visits the Lawton home after Carole Lawton sends an urgent message to her estranged father; Yarko discovers that Rita Lawton has been smuggling jewelry in her hollow heels and warns her against continuing the illegal activity, threatening to have her arrested if she does not stop.
Dan Garret, a young man driven by grief, teams up with his father’s old partner Mike Mannigan to confront Chick Alonzo, the man responsible for his father Michael Garret’s death. As Dan steps into the role of a protector, he must navigate the shadows of his past and the weight of a legacy he’s only just begun to understand.
When a young newsboy is struck down by a car in a deliberate hit, he reveals to Dan Garret that he and other boys have been threatened by extortionists demanding protection money. The Blue Beetle springs into action, arming the newsboys with whistles and taking on the gang led by Bull Blackart, whose scheme to shake down the neighborhood's newspaper sellers faces its match against the caped vigilante. It's a solid early adventure that pits the hero against street-level crime and shows his determination to protect the city's youngest workers.
When a criminal mastermind plants a newspaper ad designed to lure the Blue Beetle into a carefully constructed trap, Dan Garret accepts the bait—but not before enlisting Dr. Franz to disguise his appearance. As the Beetle springs the initial snare and battles his way through a gang of armed thugs, he discovers that this criminal scheme runs deeper than expected, forcing him to use all his wits and cunning to turn the tables on his captors.
In "The Old Hex House," Yarko ventures into a haunted estate to free Oliver Tate and his daughter Carole from the sinister control of the sorcerer Shaddiba, whose dark spells bind them to his will. With the help of the mysterious Doga and the enigmatic Ivan, Yarko must outwit ancient traps and supernatural forces before the night ends in tragedy.
