Harry Conway "Bud" Fisher was born on April 3, 1885, in Chicago, Illinois, and died on September 7, 1954. He is best known as the creator of *Mutt and Jeff*, widely recognized as the first successful daily comic strip in the United States. Fisher originally studied art at the Chicago Art Institute and later worked as a sports cartoonist for the *San Francisco Chronicle*, where he first introduced the character A. Mutt in 1907. The strip’s popularity led to a syndication deal, and Fisher soon added the tall, gullible Jeff as a foil to the scheming Mutt. Fisher wrote, drew, and lettered the strip himself for many years, establishing a clean, expressive style that emphasized clear storytelling and broad physical comedy. Over his career, he contributed to numerous *Mutt and Jeff* comic books, as well as to periodicals like *The Saturday Evening Post* and *The American Legion*. His work was a major influence on the development of newspaper comics, and he was one of the earliest cartoonists to secure ownership of his creation. Fisher’s legacy endures as a pioneer of the daily comic strip format, and he was posthumously inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame.
