About the series
Sheldon Mayer’s Sugar & Spike ran for 98 issues at DC from 1956 to 1971, a charmingly absurd and sweet-natured series centered on the toddler adventures of Sugar Plumm and Spike Wilson. Unlike typical kid comics, the babies communicated in their own babbling language that only they (and the reader) could understand, while their oblivious parents—Barbara and Bill Plumm, Peg and Harvey Wilson—saw only cute gibberish. Mayer, with occasional help from artists like Sheldon Moldoff and Bernard Baily, crafted a gentle, slapstick world of playground diplomacy and diaper-clad mischief that stands as a uniquely warm and imaginative take on childhood from the Silver Age.
