“Photo Finish”

Sheldon Mayer's delightful cover for this 1956 DC title tells a complete little story in four panels: blonde Sugar sends dishes crashing with a gleeful "Wheeee!" while red-haired Spike looks on in alarm, an adult hand delivers a scolding "Naughty! Naughty!" complete with slaps, and then the duo promptly find new ways to cause cheerful chaos around the furniture. It's the kind of gentle, warm mischief that made Sugar and Spike such a charming corner of the DC lineup, capturing the irrepressible energy of toddlerhood with a light touch. With "All New Stories" promised inside and a dime price tag, issue #2 shows Mayer already fully in command of his pint-sized stars.
