“Sugar & Spike Against Little Arthur!”

Sheldon Mayer's March 1961 Valentine's Day issue of Sugar & Spike is pure seasonal charm, with the cover showing Sugar leaning over an enormous heart-shaped gift labeled "To My Valentine" in the snow, exclaiming "But, dear — I did get you a valentine! — I can't imagine where it — OH! NO!" while a delighted Spike sits bundled in winter gear right beside it. The giant red heart with its golden ribbon has apparently revealed itself in the most wonderfully embarrassing way possible, and the snowy outdoor setting gives the whole scene a cozy, wintry warmth. With an extra Valentine's feature promised on the cover, this issue is a genuinely sweet snapshot of DC's most lovable toddler duo at their most mischievously endearing.
