Sugar & Spike #57

This Valentine's Day issue of Sugar & Spike captures the holiday's bittersweet spirit perfectly: Sugar sits cross-armed and fuming while Spike confesses (via speech bubble) that he knew the giant heart-shaped candy box hidden in the closet was "fulla candy" all along — which explains why it's now conspicuously empty when Dad presents it to Mom. Sheldon Mayer's cover art is warm and wonderfully expressive, conveying the toddlers' guilty predicament in that instantly readable style that made this series such a delight in 1965. As a bonus, the issue promises cut-out Valentine cards inside, making it a little holiday keepsake in comic book form.
