Sheldon Mayer's Sugar and Spike are at their most charming in this August 1958 DC issue, as the two toddlers peer wide-eyed into a bird's nest, debating whether the blue bird tending its tiny hatchlings is a mommy or — as Spike confidently declares — a daddy who "forgot the BIBS!" The cover perfectly captures the duo's delightful baby logic, rendered with Mayer's warmly expressive linework. At a dime a copy, this was pure, gentle fun for young readers and the grown-ups sneaking a peek over their shoulders.
