Walt Simonson

Born on September 2, 1946, Walt Simonson is an American writer and artist whose influence on superhero comics extends well beyond his considerable output. He first developed what would become his creator-owned series Star Slammers as a thesis project at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1972, an unusually ambitious origin for a comics career.

Simonson's most celebrated achievement remains his tenure on Marvel's Thor, which ran from 1983 to 1987. During that stretch he wrote and drew some of the most kinetically inventive superhero storytelling of the era, and introduced Beta Ray Bill, a fan-favorite character who has endured in Marvel's mythology ever since. His draftsmanship — dynamic, architecturally bold, and rich with mythic weight — left a visible mark on a younger generation of artists, including Arthur Adams and Todd McFarlane.

Beyond Thor, Simonson demonstrated consistent range across both major publishers. At Marvel he penciled X-Factor from 1986 to 1989 alongside writer Louise Simonson, whom he married, and contributed to Fantastic Four. His DC work included Detective Comics, Manhunter, Metal Men, and Orion. He also brought the same muscular energy to licensed properties such as Star Wars, Alien, Battlestar Galactica, and RoboCop vs. Terminator.

Active in the industry from 1971 well into the 2020s, Simonson has received numerous awards across his career, a reflection of sustained excellence rather than a single breakout moment.
