About this Issue

Thor #344 marks the first appearance of Malekith the Accursed, ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim and one of the most consequential villains Walt Simonson introduced during his celebrated run on the title. The issue is structurally bold for its era: it sidelines Thor almost entirely in favor of Balder, using his agonizing pacifist's quest as the vehicle to plant the seeds of the multi-issue Casket of Ancient Winters storyline — seeds that Jason Aaron would water decades later into the 2019 'War of the Realms' crossover event. Simonson's decision to use a supporting character's moral crisis as the delivery mechanism for a villain's debut demonstrates the kind of character-first storytelling that distinguishes his run from the Thor comics that preceded it.

In "Whatever Happened to Balder the Brave?", Walt Simonson crafts a haunting, character-driven tale as Balder, the noble god of light, embarks on a desperate mission to Loki’s realm at Odin’s command. Sent to seek aid against an ancient evil, Balder finds himself cornered by Malekith’s deception and forced to break his sacred vow of nonviolence—only to face the consequences in a desolate wasteland. With bold storytelling and striking visuals by Simonson, this issue redefines Balder’s journey with quiet tragedy and mythic weight.

History

Walt Simonson had taken over Thor as writer and artist beginning with issue #337 (November 1983), bringing with him story concepts rooted in Norse mythological research he had begun as far back as his college years in the late 1960s. By issue #344, only seven issues into his tenure, Simonson was already weaving the Surtur Saga — a multi-year epic spanning issues #340–353 — and introduced Malekith as a dark agent of Surtur already positioned inside Loki's court, deepening the conspiracy before Thor himself even encountered the villain. The issue was edited by Mark Gruenwald and colored by Christie Scheele, with lettering by John Workman — the same core production team that shaped the visual and typographic identity of Simonson's entire run.

  • Lorelei — the Enchantress's younger sister — appears in her ongoing subplot, operating under the alias 'Melodi' and attempting to manipulate Thor with enchanted golden mead as part of a plan hatched with Loki.
  • The issue falls within the broader Surtur Saga (Thor #340–353), which also involves Karnilla, Odin, Frigga, Heimdall, and the fire demon Surtur tempering the sword Twilight — all threads that converge toward the Casket of Ancient Winters storyline in subsequent issues.
  • The issue has been collected in multiple editions: the Thor by Walter Simonson Omnibus (2011, recolored by Steve Oliff), Thor by Walter Simonson Vol. 1 trade paperback (2013), Thor: Crown of Fools (2013), and the War of the Realms Prelude collection (2019); it has also appeared in French (Panini France, 2007) and Spanish (Panini España, 2013) editions.
  • Malekith's MCU adaptation appeared in Thor: The Dark World (2013), portrayed by Christopher Eccleston, elevating the character's profile; Jason Aaron also revived the comics version in Thor: God of Thunder (2012) as the primary antagonist leading into the War of the Realms event.
