“The Retribution Affair - Part V: Best Laid Plans”

Cyclops takes center stage on this 1989 Marvel Comics Presents cover, rendered in striking black and white with bold yellow energy slashing across the background — a composed yet tense image of the X-Men's field leader bracing against a dire threat. The cover copy spells out the stakes plainly: he's fighting for his life against the Retribution Virus, which forms the heart of part five of "The Retribution Affair." Walt Simonson's clean, confident linework gives the whole image a quiet intensity that makes it hard to look away.

Cyclops, Callisto and Moira are taken prisoners by Conscience and the Master Mold. As Cyclops is gradually dying from the virus, he loses his optic powers while Conscience outlines his origins. Meanwhile, two non-mutants contract the virus, which means that over 92% of humanity will die along with 100% of mutantkind. Conscience wants to stop the release of the virus, but Master Mold refuses.
