About this Issue

Avengers: Twilight #1 marks the debut of Earth-24331, a fully self-contained dystopian corner of the Marvel Multiverse in which surveillance-state authoritarianism has replaced the Heroic Age — positioning the book as Marvel's most direct answer to the tradition of 'dark future' prestige storytelling established by The Dark Knight Returns and Kingdom Come, but applied squarely to the Avengers mythology. The issue introduces James Stark, the son of Tony Stark and Janet van Dyne, as a villain who weaponizes his parents' legacy against democracy, making him the most narratively loaded legacy character debut in a Marvel prestige limited series in years. Writer Chip Zdarsky brings the same real-time-aging, thematic rigour he demonstrated in Spider-Man: Life Story to the Avengers — exploring surveillance, media manipulation, and what heroic ideals mean when the state co-opts them — giving the issue cultural weight beyond a simple alternate-future exercise. The issue also carries the distinction of debuting a second new character, Dr. Rosa Rogers, and establishing the in-universe tragedy of 'H-Day' as the fulcrum around which the entire series and its world-building turns.

History

Avengers: Twilight was conceived as a six-issue limited series and developed with Marvel VP Executive Editor Tom Brevoort; writer Chip Zdarsky and series artist Daniel Acuña participated in a retailer-facing preview event in late 2023 where Zdarsky articulated his goal of creating a story both accessible to new readers and rewarding for long-time fans, describing a self-contained format as his favourite kind of project. Acuña, a Spanish illustrator whose Marvel credits include Young X-Men, Eternals, and multiple Avengers titles, serves as the sole interior artist across all six issues — an unusual commitment for a Marvel limited series — bringing a painterly, photorealistic aesthetic that multiple critics likened to the cover work of Alex Ross, who himself supplied the primary covers for every issue in the run. The issue was released on January 17, 2024, with a cover date of March 2024, and demand was sufficient to warrant a second printing released February 28, 2024.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Written by Chip Zdarsky with interior art and colors by Daniel Acuña; lettered by VC's Joe Caramagna; primary covers by Alex Ross.
  • First appearance of James Stark (Earth-24331): the son of Tony Stark/Iron Man and Janet van Dyne/Wasp, who serves as CEO of Stark Technology and antagonist of the series, supplying Iron Man-esque armor to an authoritarian government.
  • First appearance of Dr. Rosa Rogers (Earth-24331): a supporting character who later joins the Defenders resistance movement.
  • First appearance of the Defenders (Earth-24331): an underground resistance led by an aged Luke Cage, depicted as the remnant of heroism in a post-Avengers surveillance state.
  • Matt Murdock (Daredevil) dies within this issue — established as having been 'disappeared' by the government after opening a legal clinic to challenge the Watcher Act.
  • The issue establishes 'H-Day' as the world's foundational catastrophe: a rogue Ultron attack that leveled Boston, exposed all superhero secret identities, and led directly to the outlawing of camera phones under the 'Watcher Act' — with Spider-Man and the Hulk among the confirmed dead.
  • The series is set on Earth-24331 and is a standalone, out-of-continuity limited series of six issues, complete in itself.
  • The issue includes a behind-the-scenes bonus feature on the making of the book; the full six-issue run was later collected in a trade paperback and digital edition.
