Avengers #8
Avengers Vol. 2 #8 (June 1997) marks the narrative turning point of the divisive Heroes Reborn experiment: it is Walt Simonson's second issue as the new writer, signaling the creative stabilization that would carry the book through the end of the pocket-universe era and toward the celebrated Busiek/Pérez relaunch. When Rob Liefeld's Extreme Studios lost the Avengers license after only six issues — Marvel citing poor sales — the title was transferred to Jim Lee's WildStorm Productions, and Walt Simonson, celebrated for his landmark Thor run of the early 1980s, was brought in to write the book beginning around issue #7. Simonson ultimately wrote issues #8 through #12, working with penciler Michael Ryan and a three-person inking team (Saleem Crawford, Will Conrad, and Norm Rapmund), with lettering by Richard Starkings/Comicraft and colors by Wildstorm FX. The cover for this issue was supplied by Jim Lee and Scott Williams — consistent with WildStorm's house-cover practice during this period — while the interior art was handled entirely by Ryan's team. Editor Bob Harras oversaw the issue as part of his broader stewardship of the Heroes Reborn line.
