Raney made an early mark at Image Comics on titles such as Stormwatch and DV8, helping to define the look of those WildStorm-era superhero stories. His work for Marvel includes runs on Alpha Flight, Ultimate X-Men, and Uncanny X-Men, as well as the cosmic crossover event Annihilation: Conquest. At DC, he contributed to Outsiders, Green Lantern, Avengers Academy, and the science-fiction anthology Threshold, demonstrating a consistent ability to adapt his style to a wide range of genre demands.

His art is characterized by clean, dynamic figure work suited to ensemble casts and large-scale action sequences — qualities that made him a natural fit for the team books that dominate his bibliography. Over the course of his career he has been credited on more than 219 issues as both artist and inker, with activity recorded as recently as 2024. While Raney has not been prominently associated with a single iconic character, his body of work reflects the kind of steady, professional craftsmanship that sustains the collaborative medium of monthly comics.
