Avengers Academy #20
Avengers Academy #20 — titled 'Endings' — serves as a genuine turning point in one of Marvel's most character-driven series of the Heroic Age. It closes out the six-issue Fear Itself crossover arc while simultaneously reshuffling the book's entire cast: Veil walks away from the Academy for good, instructors Speedball and Justice resign, the Infinite Avengers Mansion is destroyed, and the school relocates to the former West Coast Avengers Compound in Palos Verdes, signaling a bold new chapter for writer Christos Gage. Most significantly for collectors, it contains the debut appearance of Ava Ayala, the fifth character to bear the White Tiger mantle — a Latina heroine who would go on to headline Mighty Avengers, New Avengers, and the animated Ultimate Spider-Man series. The issue's willingness to let major characters quit entirely, rather than merely fail or lose a fight, marked Avengers Academy as a rare teen-superhero book that took long-term consequences seriously.
In "Endings," the Avengers Academy undergoes a major transformation as Veil departs for a new role with Jeremy Briggs, and instructors Speedball and Justice follow suit. With Hank relocating the school to the former West Coast Avengers compound and welcoming more students, the Academy enters a new chapter—quietly, but with unmistakable momentum. Written by Christos Gage and illustrated by Tom Raney, with colors by Jeromy Cox and letters by Joe Caramagna, the issue's cover by Billy Tan captures the bittersweet shift in tone.

The issue was written by Christos Gage with interior pencils by Tom Raney, inks by Scott Hanna, colors by Jeremy Cox, letters by Joe Caramagna, and editing by Bill Rosemann — the same core team that shepherded much of the Fear Itself tie-in arc (issues #15–20). The cover was provided by Billy Tan. Ava Ayala's inclusion came from an unusual cross-media pipeline: the character was originally conceived for the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series, but before that show premiered, Marvel asked Gage to introduce her in Avengers Academy first. Gage has publicly noted that the core concept and design of Ava Ayala were developed for the cartoon, and Tom Raney translated her to the page for this debut.
