Mike Ploog is an American comic book and storyboard artist born on July 13, 1940, who made his most enduring mark during Marvel Comics' fertile monster-comics era of the 1970s. Before entering comics, he trained under the influential Will Eisner, an apprenticeship that shaped his expressive, fluid linework and left a visible stamp on everything he produced during those years.
Marvel Spotlight #3 (1972)
At Marvel, Ploog became the defining visual voice for some of the publisher's most atmospheric horror titles. He served as the original artist on both Ghost Rider and Werewolf by Night, helping establish the visual identity of characters who would go on to long runs in the Marvel universe. He brought equal distinction to Man-Thing and The Monster of Frankenstein, demonstrating a particular gift for moody, gothic storytelling. His catalog across titles such as Planet of the Apes, Dracula Lives, and Frankenstein reflects a sustained commitment to genre work rooted in strong draftsmanship and expressive character design.

Over a career spanning more than five decades — with credits running from 1972 through 2025 — Ploog also built a substantial parallel career as a visual designer and storyboard artist in film. His comics output across roughly 169 issues shows impressive range, though it is his foundational work on Marvel's horror characters that remains his most recognized contribution to the medium.
