“Incident in Argos! (Part 1)”

Conan the Barbarian #57 (1975) kicks off "Incident in Argos! (Part 1)" with Roy Thomas and Mike Ploog delivering a gritty, high-stakes tale as Conan and his companions arrive in Messantia only to be ensnared by the city's corrupt guard. When a brutal ambush leads to a daring escape and a fateful encounter with the enigmatic fortune teller Momratha, Conan finds himself caught between loyalty and survival—while Yusuf and Tara flee after a deadly act of defiance. The story unfolds with sharp pacing and vivid art, all rendered in bold inks by Mike Ploog and vivid colors by Phil Rachelson, while Gil Kane’s striking cover captures the tension of a world where power is as dangerous as it is corrupt.

Conan and his friends arrive in Messantia and immediately come into conflict with some cocky members of the Royal guard. Two guards ambush Conan and try to sell him as a slave. Conan breaks loose and hides in the house of fortune teller Momratha, who shows him visions of his future. Meanwhile, Yusuf has killed a captain who harassed Tara, and now they are both on the run. Conan is apprehended but refuses to betray his friends. Fleeing from the courthouse, Conan kills the corrupt judge Ephemero Portus. On horseback, Conan leaves the city and leaves his friends behind.
