Jean Van Hamme
Jean Van Hamme, born on 16 January 1939 in Belgium, is one of the most prolific and influential writers in the Franco-Belgian comics tradition. Beginning his career in comics around 1968, he went on to accumulate writing credits across more than 560 issues over a span of decades, a body of work remarkable for both its scale and its consistency of quality.
Van Hamme made his early mark with Histoire sans héros before developing the series that would define his reputation. Thorgal, a sweeping fantasy-adventure blending Norse mythology with science fiction, became one of his signature achievements and remains among the most recognized titles in European comics. He followed this with XIII, a gripping amnesia thriller steeped in Cold War conspiracy, and Largo Winch, a globe-trotting adventure centered on a billionaire adventurer navigating the dangerous intersection of wealth and power. Both series demonstrated his talent for tightly constructed plots and morally complex protagonists.
Beyond these flagship titles, Van Hamme also developed Lady S., Wayne Shelton, and Rani, extending his range across espionage, action, and historical drama. His collaborations with artists across these series helped shape the visual identity of each book, with the writer-artist partnership being central to the Franco-Belgian tradition he so fully embodies.
Van Hamme also worked as a novelist alongside his comics career, bringing a literary sensibility to a medium he helped elevate to wider cultural recognition.
