Thorgal bears down on the viewer with an arrow drawn tight and ice-blue eyes locked on a target only he can see — Grzegorz Rosiński's painterly cover work gives the Norse wanderer an almost photographic intensity against a blood-red sky. Behind him, a wall of Roman-style soldiers with spears and helmets looms out of the crimson haze, setting a tone of overwhelming odds. Jean Van Hamme and Rosiński deliver another chapter of their long-running saga with this 2003 Polish edition, "Barbarzyńca" promising the kind of tense, myth-soaked adventure the series does so well.
