Who is Thanos?

Born on Saturn's moon Titan to the Eternal Mentor, Thanos inherited a rare Deviant mutation that set him apart — and apart was where he stayed. Obsessed with death and power from childhood, he augmented his already formidable Eternal-Deviant physiology through bionics and dark mysticism, emerging as one of the universe's most dangerous cosmic threats.

Few villains in Marvel's vast cosmos have cast as long a shadow as Thanos, the megalomaniacal titan who first menaced the Bronze Age pages of Daredevil #105 in 1973, brought to life by Steve Gerber and Don Heck. Over more than five decades — 383 catalog appearances and counting, with six recognized key issues marking the milestones collectors prize — he has grown from a formidable early-'70s threat into one of Marvel's most defining figures. His deepest roots run through Silver Surfer, his own eponymous series, and Guardians of the Galaxy, and the sheer weight of his presence is underscored by the company he keeps: Thor, Captain America, Spider-Man, Tony Stark, and Steve Rogers have all shared the page with this unstoppable force. If you're serious about Marvel cosmology, Thanos isn't just worth knowing — he's essential.

Trivia

  • Writers have deliberately built a self-sabotaging 'subconscious desire to lose' into the character, a behind-the-scenes creative choice that keeps him genuinely formidable while still allowing him to be defeated across major story arcs.marvel.com
  • Marvel has leaned on the Thanosi — a race of Thanos clones — as a recurring narrative device, with certain versions engineered by combining his DNA with other major Marvel characters including Professor X and Galactus.marvel.com
  • Jim Starlin has written more of Thanos's comics than any other writer in our catalog — 35 issues.
