Origin of Galactus #1
"Galactus" #1 (1996) delivers a mythic origin for the Devourer of Worlds, set in a dying universe where scientist Galan, desperate to save his people, journeys toward the heart of the collapsing cosmos. Though he survives the cosmic collapse, he awakens eons later as Galactus—transformed, immense, and bound to consume planetary lifeforce to sustain his existence. Written by Stan Lee and Mark Gruenwald, with iconic art by Jack Kirby, John Byrne, and Ron Wilson, and a striking cover by Steve Epting, this landmark issue redefines one of Marvel’s most enduring cosmic entities.

In a dying universe, on the planet of Taa, scientist Galan tries to find a way for his race to survive the end of the universe. He commandeers a spaceship towards the center of the imploding universe, but he does not die in "the big crunch". Instead, he gestates in a cocoon for billions of years in a newly-formed universe. When he emerges, it is as Galactus, and he has to feed upon the lifeforce of planets.
