Who is Garth?

Garth is an Atlantean youth who was abandoned as a child due to his unusual purple eyes, which were considered a bad omen by his people. Discovered and taken under the wing of Aquaman, he became the hero known as Aqualad and a founding member of the Teen Titans.

Few characters can claim a Silver Age debut and still be making waves across DC's pages more than six decades later, but Garth has done exactly that β€” first surfacing in Adventure Comics #269 in 1960, courtesy of creators Robert Bernstein and Lee Elias. Over 227 catalogued appearances spanning an extraordinary 65 years, he's woven himself into the fabric of DC history through Aquaman, Titans, and even the charming Tiny Titans, racking up seven key-issue appearances that any serious collector will want on their shelf. He's kept remarkable company throughout β€” sharing adventures with the likes of Dick Grayson, Donna Troy, and Wally West β€” placing him squarely at the heart of DC's beloved legacy-hero tradition. If you care about the deep roots of the DC universe and the characters who've quietly endured through every era, Garth is absolutely worth your attention.

Trivia

  • Garth holds the distinction of being the first character to carry the Aqualad codename, making him the original sidekick concept that would later anchor two separate legacy versions of the role.en.wikipedia.org
  • He was eventually retooled as Tempest, a shift that transformed him from junior partner into a standalone Atlantean sorcerer and placed him on roughly equal narrative footing with Aquaman himself.en.wikipedia.org
  • His origin was deliberately crafted as darker than a typical kid-sidekick setup, with Atlanteans casting him out as an infant because his purple eyes were regarded as a bad omen.en.wikipedia.org
  • Art Baltazar has written more of Garth's comics than any other writer in our catalog β€” 26 issues.
