Tales of the Teen Titans #45 is the first issue of the title to carry original new content after the seismic Judas Contract arc concluded, making it the debut of Dick Grayson operating as Nightwing in an ongoing adventure — not just a debut cameo — and the first issue in which Aqualad's real name, Garth, is revealed on the page, a detail that had never appeared in over two decades of published comics. History

By mid-1984, Marv Wolfman and George Pérez were simultaneously managing two landmark projects: wrapping the Judas Contract storyline and beginning pre-production on Crisis on Infinite Earths. Pérez's increasing commitments to Crisis meant that his contribution to #45 shifted to layouts rather than full pencils, with Mike DeCarlo providing finished inks over those layouts — a production arrangement the Grand Comics Database records explicitly. Wolfman and Pérez shared co-editor credits on the issue, reflecting the unusual creative autonomy they had earned on one of DC's top-selling titles of the period. The dual-publishing model that made #45 the lead original issue of Tales while the Baxter-paper New Teen Titans vol. 2 launched simultaneously was part of a DC initiative that also included Legion of Super-Heroes and Batman and the Outsiders — a strategy of selling premium editions to specialty shops while newsstand readers received the Tales series.
